Grog Ceremony
A few returning vets and some new ones showed up in Colorado Springs to celebrate with the 'old' unit, it's return from Afghanistan in September. From Alpha Co (66-67 era), Bill Comeau, Albert Peckham, Norm Smith and retired CSM Larry Walter, who was the guest speaker at the Ball on Saturday night. Prior to the Ball, the unit acted as gracious hosts on Friday and gave the veterans and wives a tour of the post which included the 4th ID museum, Evans Hospital (MOH posthumously awarded to Donald Evans, Medic with A Co) lunch at the dining hall, followed by a tour of battalion HQ, then a seven station exhibit at the company area, manned by our soldiers, who talked about their area of expertise. There was exhibits of basic loads carried by the soldiers, including water and provisions, sniper rifles, SAW's, commo equipment, siteing apparatus for heavy weapons, 81MM and 120MM equipment and a Medic with his full array of supplies and tools.  It was great to talk with the men about the equipment they use today and just to "small talk".

Saturday night started with a no host open bar at 1730, then the receiving line which we all went through. We were seated in the banquet room, then posted the colors, exchanged toasts for everything from the President to the Vietnam Veterans attending the Ball. Following this, we were asked to stand as the honored guests and were toasted then given a standing ovation. I almost lost it there. Very emotional for me that night. We then had the Grog Ceremony which you can watch the video of below this byline. After dinner, Larry Walker was introduced as the guest speaker and gave a wonderful talk which you can also view from this page. The "MESS" was officially ended after Larry was presented a steel plate in the shape of our unit crest. After the mess closed, dancing followed and socializing and small talk continued until I dropped out around 2AM. We met for breakfast Sunday morning and then said our "goodbyes" and everyone went their seperate ways.
